Mirjam Aigner - The Artist
Mirjam is one of Australia’s leading proponents of contemporary textile art and produces uniquely designed artwork for individuals, corporate consignments and community projects.
Like a solo adventurer, Mirjam is highly focused and engaged in her work, and has the curiosity and courage to explore accepted boundaries to find different ways of expressing and connecting her artwork and her vision to us. Mirjam brings to the outside world what she feels in layers of emotions, perceptions and consciousness.
Her art-textiles are a multi-dimensional experience that draw you into a deeper, intense and captivating world. As you explore more and more of this world, you experience yourself and the world, in a richer way. Mirjam is an alchemist who integrates emotions, perceptions and consciousness in an ever-expanding vision that unfolds as you are drawn further and further into her work.
The source material for Mirjam’s inspiration is in nature as well as in the history and story-telling of human-kind. The light, the colours, the seasons, the way nature expresses and affects us differently depending on its own state of being. And of course, the way it constantly evolves and connects everything to itself.
Mirjam is like an alchemist that brings to life her sleeping and waking visions of her inner world. She is the bridge that connects us to ourselves, at a very deep level. As she saturates in the clear, uncomplicated aspects of nature, she allows it to work its magic on her, drawing her into its multi-faceted beauty and providing her with constant stimulation so she can do her magic with it.

"We are lucky to be experiencing such an artist as Mirjam because nothing goes to waste with her. The moment, the material, the connections, and the people all come together to weave and connect in ways that would be unexpected and surprising. That is the gift of Mirjam. To be born in every moment to the potential within ourselves and the universe. Mirjam’s gift is her ability to absorb everything, to observe, to reflect, to apply and to learn. Mirjam Aigner – Her Story
Mirjam’s complete immersion in art is a result of an active decision to explore an unfolding terrain, pulling her since early childhood. Born in the Netherlands, Mirjam’s childhood holidays were spent in the lower mountains of Southern France, immersed in the boldness and serenity of nature, and continually awakening to the changing lights and sounds of the seasons.
In her early twenties, after travelling the world, Mirjam found her love, and Australia is where she stayed. The landscape, the man, the inspiration, and the sense of freedom and exploration all beckoned her to make Australia her home.

While living in Sydney, Mirjam attended a textile course in Strathfield and was introduced to the basics of Spinning, Weaving, basic Wool Classifying and working with Design and Colour. Armed with the basics, Mirjam began to explore and create freeform artwork during her time as a mum, and as a teacher of French and German. Her insatiable curiosity for textile-art drew her firstly into patchwork quilting, and then into exploring deeper how textiles could be used and combined to create a richer, and more involving dynamic form of expression.
For 10 years, Mirjam used her studies in colour and design and started to explore art quilting in her own unique way. From ripping fabric into strips, experimenting with various dying methods, portrait painting on fabric, discharge colour from printed fabric and many other options available to a textile artist.

During this time, Mirjam began to question more and more, and to seek a freedom in her art. A serendipitous encounter with Joan Schultz, a leading American textile artist, in a 5 Day Art Class in Ballarat, was the spark that affirmed Mirjam’s journey as a free-form textile-artist. Mirjam took to the skies and attended another class with Joan Schultz, this time in America. On her return to Australia, and in 2014, Mirjam knew she was ready to commit to her unfolding vision and became a full-time artist and facilitator.
With her vision now unfolding, Mirjam started implementing these new techniques and felt a complete unity in this form. With a new-found confidence, Mirjam started winning prizes and with her first submission to “Regeneration” at Manly Art Gallery, was accepted into one of the most prestigious textile art exhibitions in Australia.
Mirjam now lives in Pambula NSW where she finds herself back at the ocean, like Southern France, and immersed in the changing nature of the seasons. Mirjam returns to nature to be inspired, connected and to dream her art into being.
